The Coelum Philosophorum, also known as "The Book of Vexations," is a treatise on alchemy attributed to the 16th-century Swiss physician and alchemist Philippus Theophrastus Paracelsus. The work presents a systematic approach to alchemy, regulated by seven fundamental rules or canons derived from the seven commonly known metals: Mercury, Jupiter, Mars, Venus, Saturn, Sol (Sun), and Luna (Moon). The text aims to clarify the science and nature of alchemy and guide readers on what opinion should be formed regarding it.
The core of the work, Part I, details the Seven Canons of the Metals, which explore the nature and properties of each metal and their interactions. For instance, the First Canon discusses Mercury as a vessel containing all things, possessing a unique, fiery liquefaction that defies natural heat and cold, and is associated with a "fire of Gehenna". The Second Canon examines Jupiter, describing it as a body where the other metals are spiritually concealed, with its properties influenced by its proximity to other metals, particularly Sol and Luna, which imbue it with greater "goldness" or "silveriness".
